There are two types of bile duct cancers:
- Intrahepatic: cancer that arises from within the liver
- Extrahepatic: cancer that arises from outside of the liver and distal bile ducts
Bile duct cancers can be further classified based on the tissue in which they form. Most bile duct cancers are adenocarcinomas, meaning they form in glandular tissue.
