Jan-Karl Burkhardt, MD, has joined the Department of Neurosurgery as an assistant professor of neurosurgery.

Dr. Burkhardt completed neurosurgery residency training at the University Hospital Zurich, in Switzerland, one of the world’s leading centers for cerebrovascular surgery, followed by a cerebrovascular surgery fellowship at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco and a neuroendovascular surgery fellowship at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York.

Prior to being recruited to Penn, Dr. Burkhardt held faculty positions at the University Hospital Zurich and at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. At Baylor, he served as chief of the neurovascular service at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center and as co-director of the microneurosurgery lab.

Dr. Burkhardt’s clinical practice will focus on neurovascular disorders, including complex and previously treated vascular lesions, employing both open microsurgical and endovascular techniques.

In addition, Dr. Burkhardt has unique expertise in cerebral revascularization with extracranial-intracranial bypass surgery for moyamoya disease and is actively engaged in research to better understand the pathogenesis of moyamoya disease.

Dr. Burkhardt will see patients at the Penn Neuroscience Center at the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.
