Penn Surgery is pleased to announce that Dr. Charles Vollmer has been appointed Chief of GI Surgery at Penn Medicine. Dr. Vollmer also serves as the Director of Pancreatic Surgery and the Co-Director of the Penn Pancreatic Cyst Multidisciplinary Program.

Dr. Vollmer completed his surgical residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital of Washington University in St. Louis, followed by a fellowship in hepatobiliary and solid organ transplantation surgery at the medical school of the University of Toronto. He then completed a fellowship in medical education at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center of Harvard Medical School, where he was on faculty for eight years. Arriving at Penn Medicine in 2011, Dr. Vollmer was promoted to full Professor in 2015.

At Penn Medicine, Dr. Vollmer's clinical interests encompass both malignant and benign conditions of the pancreas, duodenum, Ampulla of Vater and biliary system, with a strong emphasis on the care of pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis, as well as cysts of the pancreas. His primary research focus is pancreas surgery, where and he has made numerous contributions to clinical outcomes research, particularly for postoperative pancreas fistula.

Board certified in surgery, Dr. Vollmer practices at the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.
