Penn Cardiovascular Surgery welcomes Michael Ibrahim, MD, PhD, who joins Penn Medicine as Director of both the Mitral and Reconstructive Valve Surgery and Mechanical Circulatory Support programs at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Dr. Michael Ibrahim is a graduate of the University of Cambridge and Imperial College, where he earned both his MD and PhD degrees, completing the latter under the mentorship of Sir Magdi Yacoub, one of the world’s foremost cardiac surgeons. He went on to complete an integrated cardiac surgical residency at the University of Pennsylvania. Most recently, Dr. Ibrahim undertook advanced super-fellowship training in the Ross operation and reconstructive valve surgery at Mt. Sinai Hospital surgery with Ismail El-Hamamsy, MD, PhD, and robotic and transcatheter mitral valve reconstruction at The Heart Hospital - Plano with Robert L. Smith, MD.

Dr. Ibrahim performs the full spectrum of adult cardiac surgery, including heart transplantation, and has a specialization in reconstructive valve surgery. His research aims to understand the fundamental molecular mechanisms of mechanoregulation of the cardiomyocyte t-tubule system using super-resolution microscopy and novel biomechanical models which supersede conventional investigative tools.

Dr. Ibrahim sees patients at both Penn Cardiovascular Surgery Penn Presbyterian and Penn Heart and Vascular Center Cherry Hill.
