Standard hearing loss treatment options for adults suffering from progressive hearing loss include hearing aids provided by the Penn Hearing Aid Program or implantable hearing devices provided by the Penn Implantable Hearing Device Program.

One of the many advantages of identifying the genetic cause of a patient's adult-onset hearing loss is that their treatment options can be directed at the specific genetic cause, applied early in the course of the condition, and could prevent decades of hearing rehabilitation, ultimately leading to a better quality of life for the patient. In addition, early identification and intervention has the potential to prevent irreversible damage to the complex anatomic relationships necessary for proper cochlear function.

The Center for Adult-Onset Hearing Loss also provides patients with access to a genetic counselor who will obtain family history, explain genetic testing, and communicate your results if you decide to move forward with genetic testing.
