Penn Medicine gynecologists provide personalized care for adolescent and young adult women. Our women’s health specialists tailor services to meet all of your health care challenges and needs.

We realize the first few gynecology visits might feel awkward. We help put you at ease as you begin the journey to a lifetime of well-woman care.

Gynecology Services for Teens and Young Adult Women

The teen and young adult years present unique challenges. You will get your first period (and then many more). You may become sexually active, and sometimes, unexpected gynecologic problems occur. Whatever the issue, we’re here to guide you and help you stay well.

Our gynecology services for teens and young adults include:

  • Well-woman exams: Your gynecological exam may include a pelvic exam and a Pap smear. A Pap test checks for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), cancer and other problems.
  • Birth control: You have more birth control options than ever before. We’re familiar with all of them. We’ll discuss your needs and help you choose a method that works for you. We also help with emergency contraception (the morning-after pill) to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse.
  • Pregnancy care: When you’re ready to start a family, we help you get in the best health before you conceive. Our pregnancy experts guide you through a healthy pregnancy and childbirth. Learn about our obstetrics program.
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention: We make sure you have the information you need to prevent STDs. If you get an STD (and many people do, so don’t be embarrassed), we help clear it up. In the case of a lifelong STD like herpes, we help you manage the disease and prevent outbreaks. You can also get the HPV vaccine to prevent this common STD that increases your risk of cervical cancer.
  • LGBTQ+ services: We’re among a select few centers in the country offering specialized reproductive health services for the LGBTQ+ community. Learn more about our Program for LGBTQ+ Health.

Specialized Care for Conditions That Affect Teens and Young Women

We specialize in problems that commonly affect teens and young women. These health issues include:

  • Period problems: You’re more prone to menstrual issues at this stage in life. You may have excessively heavy periods, severe cramps or irregular cycles. We help figure out the cause and get your periods back on track.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): Our PCOS Center provides services that address all symptoms. We can help you manage irregular periods, infertility, weight gain, diabetes and more.
  • Premenstrual syndrome: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) can make you feel depressed, anxious and irritable. We partner with the Penn Center for Women’s Behavioral Wellness to help you cope with menstruation-related mood changes.
  • Urinary and vaginal infections: Urinary tract infections (UTIs), yeast infections and other vaginal infections like bacterial vaginosis (VB) are common. We quickly diagnose the problem so you can start treatment and feel better fast.

Care for Chronic Conditions

We work with your primary care physician and other Penn specialists to manage chronic conditions. Diabetes, PCOS, thyroid disease and other conditions can affect your choice of birth control, increase the risk of pregnancy complications and cause other problems.

We partner with these and other Penn programs to protect your health:
