Your 30s, 40s and 50s bring many changes. You may wish to start or add to your family (or prevent pregnancy). You might start perimenopause or develop problems like urinary incontinence or diabetes. Penn Medicine gynecologists are at your side, guiding you through all of these life transformations.
Gynecology Services for Women in Their 30s, 40s and 50s
We offer a breadth of gynecology services to meet your distinct needs. Our services include:
- Well-woman exams: We perform pelvic exams, breast exams and Pap smears. These exams check for cancers, sexually transmitted diseases (STDS) and other issues.
- Family planning: We work with you to find the birth control method that best fits your needs. If you have a condition like diabetes or high blood pressure, we know which contraceptives are safe for you to take. We also help with emergency contraception (the morning-after pill) to prevent unwanted pregnancy after sexual intercourse.
- Pregnancy care: Whether you’re starting a family or want to have another baby, Penn is where you want to be. More Philadelphia families choose us for pregnancy care. Learn more about our obstetrics program.
- Sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention: We help you prevent STDs. If you happen to become infected (and many people do), we quickly diagnose and treat the problem. You can also get help with managing lifelong STDs like herpes. Some sexually active women younger than 45 may get the HPV vaccine. This vaccine prevents HPV, a common STD that increases your risk of cervical cancer and other cancers.
- Gynecologic surgery: If you need surgery for a gynecologic problem like endometriosis or uterine fibroids, our gynecologic surgeons perform minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries. We use smaller incisions to promote a faster recovery. Our surgeons also perform tubal ligations and hysterectomies.
- Perimenopause and menopause care: Perimenopause, the transition to menopause, typically begins in your 40s. We help you manage symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats, that often come on as hormone levels drop. These same treatments can help if you enter menopause early from cancer treatments or surgical removal of the ovaries (oophorectomy). Learn more about perimenopause and menopause care.
- LGBTQ+ services: Penn is one of a select few centers nationwide offering specialized reproductive health services for the LGBTQ+ community. Find out more about our Program for LGBTQ+ Health.
Specialized Well-Woman Care for Midlife
We care about your wellness, and we specialize in problems that may affect your midlife years. Find help for:
- Cancer screenings: Get the tests you need for breast cancer, colon cancer and gynecologic cancers. You may get mammograms through Penn Breast Imaging. Our Gynecologic Oncology Program specializes in cancers that affect the reproductive system.
- Menstruation issues: Your period can become irregular as you approach menopause. You may have excessively heavy periods or severe cramps. We help relieve these symptoms and rule out other problems.
- Mental health concerns: If you have depression, postpartum depression, anxiety, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or other issues, we partner with Penn Center for Women’s Behavioral Wellness to get you the help you need.
- Pelvic floor disorders: Urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and other pelvic floor disorders are more common after pregnancy and as you age. Experts in our Urogynecology Program offer nonsurgical and surgical treatments.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): Women with PCOS receive complete care at our PCOS Center. We help with irregular periods, infertility, weight gain, diabetes and skin changes.
- Vaginal infections: We quickly diagnose and treat urinary tract infections (UTIs), yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis (VB) and other common infections. We help you prevent recurring infections.
- Weight problems: Your metabolism slows as you grow older. Excess weight can increase your risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. We offer nutrition counseling and weight management services to help you maintain a healthy weight.
Care for Chronic Conditions
Health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure and thyroid disease are more common at this time in life. We work with Penn specialists and your primary care physician to manage these chronic conditions.
