8 Week Foundation Course
We offer on line as well as in person options
Foundation courses are for individuals who are new to mindfulness. Or those who would like to refresh their practice. This course is a structured process of learning mindfulness-based techniques that can be personalized for use in real life situations.
This 8-week course will train you in mindfulness meditation techniques that can help you to:
- Reduce stress
- Increase focus and mental clarity
- Improve communication in relationships
- Enhance quality of life and improve mood
- Manage difficult situations
All class materials are provided, including homework handouts and audio recordings of guided meditation exercises for use at home.
All registrations are accepted on a "pending approval" basis, and will be reviewed to ensure that the program is a proper fit, if not all money will be refunded promptly.
Each class builds upon the previous week's lesson, so it is important that you plan to attend all eight sessions as well as the all day retreat.
In each class, participants will be taught a mindfulness technique and asked to practice it during the class.
Classes will include discussions led by the instructor as well as some small group and/or one-on-one exercises. Participation in these activities is encouraged (but is not mandatory).
Every participant is asked to make a commitment to attend the sessions and to practice the techniques learned in class for at least 40 minutes each day and to follow along with weekly homework assignments.

Deepening Connections
This program was created to help participants enhance their practice, to deepen its role in their lives and to create a community of practitioners who can practice and grow together. It explores the interpersonal, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of experience through mindfulness practice, exercises, discussions, and an open investigation of life as it arises in the moment.
By participating in the program you are making a commitment:
- to maintain a regular practice for duration of the annual program
- to participate in the monthly large group meetings
- to attend monthly small group meetings in between large group sessions. Sessions are in person at The William Penn Charter School in East Falls, PA or by Zoom.
The program utilizes both meditation and contemplative interpersonal exercises in small groups. If you have questions about the program content or its suitability for you, feel free to contact mindfulness@pennmedicine.upenn.edu or the course director, Michael Baime, at baime@pennmedicine.upenn.edu
