Doctor speaking with elderly patient

A sarcoma is a cancer of the connective tissue, such as nerves, muscles, fat, tendons or bones. Sarcomas can arise anywhere in the body and are frequently hidden deep in the limbs. Because they are very rare, they are often misdiagnosed and assumed to be sports injuries, arthritis or benign bumps.

If you’ve been diagnosed with hip sarcoma, it is extremely important to receive treatment at a cancer center that specializes in the treatment of sarcoma. Patients from all over the world come to Penn Medicine for our leading-edge Orthopaedic Oncology Program. If you’re worried about hip pain or a lump, we offer same-day biopsy whenever possible. And if surgical treatment is recommended, our orthopaedic oncologists can handle the most complex pelvic and other major joint resections and reconstructions.

It’s important to know that there are also many benign tumors that may be causing hip pain. The best course of action is to be seen by one of our orthopaedic oncologists to evaluate your pain.
