Spine Surgical Second Opinion Program

Our experienced team of spine specialists offers second opinions to any patient who has received a surgical spinal diagnosis as the next step in treatment.

Diagnostic tests offered at the Penn Spine Center include:

  • High-resolution MRI and CT scanning: These tests are able to see through multiple layers of the spine and show any abnormality of soft tissues, such as nerves and ligaments. An MRI can show pressure on the spinal cord or spinal nerves.
  • EOS imaging: This advanced imaging system allows doctors to see a complete view of the spine, from top to bottom in 3-D. The Penn Spine Center is the only center in the region with this type of detailed, advanced imaging system. EOS uses less radiation than a CT scan or conventional radiography.
  • Myelography: This procedure places special dye into the spinal sac which highlights the spinal cord and nerve roots so that disc and bone spur problems can be seen.
  • Electromyography (EMG): This test looks at the function of the nerve roots and shows if a nerve is being irritated or pinched as it leaves the spine.
  • Discogram: This test is used to determine which disc(s) are damaged. It requires injecting dye into the center of the injured disc(s) to determine if there is a disc problem.
