State-of-the-art solutions come from research, and Penn Medicine is one of the country’s leaders in the field of diagnosing and treating sleep apnea.

Dr. Dedhia is conducting important research on:

  • The effects of sleep surgery on cardiovascular outcomes in patients with treatment-resistant sleep apnea (funded by the American Heart Association)
  • Tongue stimulation as a method for relieving sleep apnea (funded by the National Institutes of Health)
  • A natural sleep endoscopy tool that uses a thin fiber during natural sleep
  • DISE PAP, a pioneering diagnostic tool that combines a drug-induced sleep endoscopy with a positive airway pressure device
  • Sleep MRIs, a diagnostic method that may provide better visualization of obstructions than a scope

Training Sleep Apnea Specialists

Dr. Dedhia is training the next generation of physicians to approach sleep apnea using his comprehensive diagnostic protocol. Three of the four ENT fellows specializing in sleep medicine in the United States are at Penn Medicine, and all of Penn’s Sleep Medicine fellows spend a month under his supervision in order to gain this critical understanding of the condition.
