Listen to Dr. Samir Mehta discuss Lawn Mower Safety Tips from Penn Medicine's Level 1 Trauma Center.
Tip 1: make sure you are wearing protective shoes. Avoid wearing sandals or any open toe shoes. Things can kick out of the lawn mower and can strike your foot at a really high rate. You may want to consider wearing golf spikes or cleats; this will give you better traction and will be protective around your feet.
Tip 2: Never push the lawn mower uphill. Instead you want to push the mower across the lawn or downhill. Pushing the lawn mower uphill can result in it slipping on to you, and if you are not careful this can lead to the lawn mower going over your foot or leg. There are over 250,000 mowing related injuries in the U.S. each year.
Tip 3: Turn off mower before touching the blade. If you think there is something stuck in your lawn mower, make sure to always turn off the mower. If you do not turn of the mower, the blade will come in contact with you and this result in a very serious traumatic injury.
