Health literacy is the ability of patients to access and understand health information in order to make informed health decisions. To ensure that staff is meeting these needs, HUP offers numerous opportunities to enhance their skills. In addition, health literacy is discussed during orientation and staff are offered the opportunity to attend programs. Staff can also go on Knowledge Link to learn about health literacy: “Meeting Your Patients’ Health Literacy Needs: Evidence-Based Strategies Part I and II” (CME/CNE-accredited).

Every October, in recognition of Health Literacy Month, HUP’s Patient and Family Education Committee plans special activities For this year’s theme — Health Literacy: Easy as “A PIE” (Assessment, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation) — activities will include unit rounds focusing on “Using Teach Back Effectively” on October 8, from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m., and October 21, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will also be a patient education table in the Perelman Center atrium on October 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will also be a Patient Panel Presentation (“The Whole Pie: Optimal Transitions in Care”) on October 8,  from noon to 1:00 p.m. in Hirst Auditorium

Nurse: 1 Contact Hour will be awarded for attending the presentation
