The Patient and Guest Relations team recently bid a fond retirement to Joe Casertano, a beloved ambassador who helped patients in and out of their cars and escorted them to their appointments for 26 years, most recently at the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.
By the time he retired, the team’s office had accumulated stacks of thank-you cards from appreciative families.
“Joe was highly respected, well-liked, and comfortable with everyone he talked to, from patients to the CEO. All of the administrators knew him by name. He lived by the motto, ‘Treat everyone like family,’” said Mona Matson, director of Patient and Guest Relations. She said Casertano had “scan-a-vision,” always watching and observing for opportunities to help patients.
Casertano credited his longevity to his ability to listen to each patient and adapt to what they needed.
“Some people like you to joke around, and sometimes, you don’t want to say too much. I just try to listen to them and comfort them,” Casertano said. “You have to listen, from the time you’re in school to when you’re old like me. You never know everything.”
