We asked staff: What person, place, or thing recharges you to bring your best self to work?
Mariel Harden, MHA, administrative fellow
Mariel Harden, middle, with her sister, Julia Collins, and two-year-old niece, Juliet
“When I need to recharge, I will hang out with my younger sister, Juliet – she also works at Penn Medicine, as a patient services associate for Cardiology in Cherry Hill – and my two-year-old niece or have a FaceTime date with them. They always keep me laughing and serve as great reminders that our worth does not come from just our jobs. Time goes by too fast, so we must do what we can to protect and foster our relationships with our family and close loved ones. My hope is to always inspire both of them to realize their potential and know that the sky is always the limit for us as biracial women.”

“’The Four Agreements’ by Don Miguel Ruiz has inspired me to be my best self in everything I do. Though there are four agreements, the one that meant the most to me was, “Always Do Your Best.” If you know that you’ve done your best and given all that you’ve had to offer, there is nothing more to worry about. It has helped me understand that when things go wrong, I should have self-compassion and accept that I’ve done my best. We are our worst critics, and it’s important to extend ourselves the same love and compassion as we give to others.”
Heather Gregg, BSN, CCRN, nursing professional development specialist
“Spending time hiking with my family and helping my three kids develop a love for the outdoors recharges me so I can bring my best self to work. We took a trip to West Virginia this summer and hiked some high points. Pictured is my 10-year-old son at the top of Spruce Knob, West Virginia’s highest point.”
