George Iyoob, RN, BSN, NE-BC, director of Trauma and Orthopedics, and Catherine Greco, administrative coordinator, volunteered to serve up an early-morning meal to the hungry docs.

PPMC is appreciative of the incredible, innovative work of our physicians all year round, and National Doctors’ Day offers us another, official chance to recognize their resolve and flexibility in an ever-changing healthcare landscape, celebrate their contributions to Presby and our patients, and thank them for their commitment to creating a healthier community.

Before Doctors’ Day was designated a national holiday in 1990, it was the brainchild of Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of Dr. Charles Almond. The celebration was first observed on March 30, 1933, in Winder, Georgia, and it served as a way to recognize physicians for their devotion to their patients’ health and wellness. Red carnations – still the celebration’s official flower – were placed on the graves of deceased doctors, and ‘thank you’ cards were sent to physicians and their families.

Almond chose March 30 in honor of the date Dr. Crawford Long first used ether to anesthetize a patient during surgery in 1842, a historic moment of modern medicine. Interestingly enough, Long actually earned his MD at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1839!

To celebrate PPMC’s physicians for the compassionate care they show each patient, the Medical Affairs, Administration, and Nursing teams joined forces and scheduled a full breakfast reception for after spring break. On April 10, the Wright-Saunders Rotunda was awash in the smell of French toast, coffee, and omelets, and each doctor was presented with a red carnation and a gift as a token of thanks for their years of sacrifice and training in pursuit of their calling.

“We love being able to take the opportunity to officially celebrate the tireless work of our doctors and to serve them, just as they do their best to serve every patient and family that comes through Presby’s doors,” said Kathleen Sullivan, medical staff coordinator in Medical Affairs. “Our physicians are invaluable, and it’s so important to take a moment to pause and honor the work they do.”
