To address food insecurity during the holidays, Penn Medicine hosted its 15th annual Turkey Toss in early December. The event made 863 frozen turkeys available for low-income families in South and West Philadelphia through the South of South Neighborhood Association, People’s Emergency Center, the Mantua Civic Association, and the West Powelton/Saunders Park Community Organization. Health System volunteers counted and recounted bags, lifted bird after frozen bird, loaded up vehicles, and broke down boxes. Community Relations Manager Laura Lombardo thanked the volunteers, saying that due to their efforts, “863 families in our hospital’s service area had one less worry, as they planned their family holiday dinners.”
