When Tonya was admitted to Lancaster General Hospital in January 2012, her chances of survival were slim. Tonya had suffered from a heroin overdose on New Year’s Eve, which left her in a coma lasting 30 days. All signs indicated she would never recover from the incident.
However, even with all odds against her, Tonya’s nurse, Adriane Freeman, BSN, never gave up hope. Freeman and the 5 North team stayed by Tonya’s side and waited for her to wake up. When Tonya miraculously awoke from her coma in February 2012, she was filled with gratitude for the attention she received from her caretakers. She was soon transferred to Lancaster Rehabilitation Hospital, where she continued to heal.
Tonya has since made a full recovery and is spending time traveling throughout Lancaster County, educating people on her experience and the dangers of drug abuse. She now has been sober for seven years and lives happily with her 5-year-old son.
