This year has forced all of us at Pennsylvania Hospital to balance a range of complex challenges in new ways. We continue to provide excellent care to every patient, even as COVID-19 cases surge. We have maintained a civil, professional, and empathetic environment, even as tensions remain high across the nation. We masterfully juggle personal and familial responsibilities, even as we determine how to make the most out of a holiday season unlike any other. And amid all of this, our staff have also made significant strides on the path to building an antiracist hospital and health system.

Over the last several weeks, our Nomination Committee diligently reviewed more than 60 applications from employees who expressed an interest in leading six new workgroups aligned with the Office of Inclusion and Diversity’s Action for Cultural Transformation framework. Beginning this month, these groups will meet regularly and work together to shape our diversity, inclusion, and equity goals. I am deeply appreciative of everyone who has pledged to take on this commitment. The positive response to this grassroots-style work has been very encouraging, and I look forward to learning more about the opportunities for sustainable change that these groups identify.

If you were not able to volunteer for our ACT groups, please stay tuned. True progress takes time and a collective commitment to growth, and there will be plenty of additional opportunities to share your voice.

As this grueling year finally comes to a close, I want to reiterate how proud I am to work with such an exceptional team. Your relentless dedication and willingness to embrace change have kept our hospital going even on the toughest days. Your patients, colleagues, and community are eternally grateful for your colossal efforts. A new year will bring both new obstacles and new chances to address lingering issues. I believe that with the momentum that we have built together, we will overcome these challenges and create a better, stronger Pennsylvania Hospital.
