At Pennsylvania Hospital, we are always poised to embrace change when new challenges or opportunities arise, from implementing new, innovative processes to treat our patients to reimagining care at the height of the pandemic. Currently, we are experiencing a change in leadership, recognizing the retirement of Michael N. Braffman, MD, who has served as chair of Medicine for the past 10 years. He will be concluding his 35-year career at PAH at the end of October.
During the course of his time at PAH, Dr. Braffman was credited as one of the city’s Top Docs™ by Philadelphia Magazine, awarded the Edward D. Viner Teaching Award for his contributions to the professional development of the hospital’s residents, and even had a new award – the Dr. Michael N. Braffman Compassionate Leadership Award – named in his honor, among other achievements. His perseverance and guidance helped us through the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating true leadership to our staff and residents and inspiring the next generation of physicians.
We will soon be moving forward to a new generation of leaders, including the appointment of Marc Shalaby, MD, FACP, who will be taking on Dr. Braffman’s role as the new chair of Medicine. No stranger to Penn, Dr. Shalaby has previously served as a professor of Clinical Medicine in General Internal Medicine and the program director of the Internal Medicine – Primary Care Residency Program at Penn Medicine. Similar to Dr. Braffman, Dr. Shalaby has made significant contributions to resident training, offering his expertise to health systems nationwide on redesigning their programs to ensure a productive path for future doctors.
We are confident in Dr. Shalaby’s ability to lead us in elevating our own residency program and strengthening the way care is delivered to our patients. On behalf of all staff, we wish Dr. Braffman a happy retirement and we look forward to having Dr. Shalaby on board to continue PAH’s long history of excellence at Penn Medicine.
