Ericka Borrero, MSW, LSW
The annual Emil and Lynn Hubschman Award honors an individual at PAH who demonstrates exemplary care at the hospital, upholding high standards of professionalism and an exceptional attitude of caring. This year’s award was presented to a staff member who cared for a patient during a long-term stay at PAH.
Ericka Borrero, MSW, LSW, a social worker on 5 Cathcart, assisted a patient who had an intellectual disability, and was also experiencing housing insecurity. While staying in the unit, the patient frequently experienced strong emotional outbursts, which posed daily challenges for floor staff. Borrero’s patience and compassionate nature allowed her to connect with the patient on a personal level. She met with the patient every day, reassuring them, sharing jokes, and calming them down when they felt anxious. At the end of the extensive stay, Borrero successfully had the patient transferred to a supportive group home.
“One of the big things Ericka did in this case was not only make sure that the patient’s needs were met, but she also ensured that staff felt heard and validated, such as helping to create resources on how to best care for the patient for the transition from day to night shift,” said Stephanie Chando, PhD, LCSW, MSW, MEd, Case Management & Social Work manager.
Borrero is only one of a few social workers at PAH to receive a Hubschman Award in its 33-year history. Similarly, Lynn Hubschman, who established the award, formerly served as director of Social Work Services until 1986.
“This case was a true team effort. Everyone in the unit did an amazing job navigating care for the patient,” said Borrero. “To Lynn Hubschman, from one social worker to another, thank you for creating this award. It means a lot to receive this. I’m very proud to be a social worker.”
