The CPUP Committee on Antiracism and the Neurology department’s Committee on Community & Social Action partnered with the African American Museum in Philadelphia to participate in its weeklong Kwanzaa celebration.
Member of the Community & Social Action Committee Sharon Lewis, MD, FCCP, associate professor of Neurology, was a speaker at the museum’s first event, discussing umoja, or unity – one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa – and how people can become unified through self-care within their communities.
“Self-care has become really important throughout the pandemic. We’ve been socially isolated and have lost a lot of our normal routines,” said Lewis. “I wanted to share ways that people can take care of their own well-being, and also come together and promote wellness with those around them, such as planting trees in their neighborhoods, which can improve the environment and boost mental health.”
