A Legacy of Leaders
Pennsylvania Hospital was founded by Dr. Thomas Bond and Benjamin Franklin with the mission to provide compassionate care and pioneer innovative research to serve Philadelphia’s residents and its surrounding communities. They were known for their leadership, supporting the operational and financial means of the hospital as Board members, but also for their expertise and curiosity in clinical care that helped transform the future of medicine. Bond and Franklin’s mission is still demonstrated today by our dedicated staff who continue PAH’s long legacy of trailblazers and strong leaders.
In this issue of What’s New, we recognize several of PAH’s team members who have served in leadership positions, such as Michael Braffman, MD, former chairman of Medicine, who has served PAH for more than 35 years and shaped the lives of our medical students, interns, and residents in their clinical journeys.
We recognize our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee who strive to strengthen the culture within our workplace by coordinating celebrations for Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Pride Month, and Juneteenth this summer.
We recognize our volunteers who not only dedicate their free time to supporting patients at the bedside but who brainstorm new initiatives to enhance the patient experience.
While these are only a few examples, I see the qualities of leadership exemplified every day at the hospital. From observing a hindrance in a work process and sharing solutions with your team, to guiding a colleague or patient through a question or challenging task, you all have an inherent sense of what it means to be a leader – an individual who helps and guides others toward success – and I thank you for helping us guide PAH in a direction that continues to uphold our high-quality standards of care.
