Hospitals that receive bundled payments for joint replacements either voluntarily or through Medicare’s mandatory programs, vary by size and volume, but not in spending or quality, signaling a need for both programs, according to a new study from researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Americans average a whopping $9,403 per person in annual health care spending, which is much more than the per-capita health spending in other wealthy, aging countries—Germans and Dutch, for example, average $5,182 and $5,202 respectively. But while America’s higher prices tend to get most of the attention in analyses of its health care overspending, there are also big differences in the volumes of health care purchases.

Experts from the Perelman School of Medicine at University of Pennsylvania will be presenting data on the latest advances in cardiovascular research and treatment at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2017 from November 11th through November 15th in Anaheim, California.
