In an effort to reduce disparities and increase the understanding of suicide, the National Institutes of Health awarded Penn Medicine researchers a grant of more than $14 million over the next five years to develop the Penn Innovation in Suicide Prevention Implementation Research (INSPIRE) Center.

When the facility opens in fall 2022, it will be the first proton therapy center in South Jersey and one of just 42 in the United States. This new, suburban community location provides patients added convenience of being nearer to home and loved ones while undergoing treatment and recovery.

The five-year award will fund three new melanoma research projects that translate fundamental laboratory discoveries made in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and The Wistar Institute into new therapeutics to treat skins cancers.
