More than $2 million in grants from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will allow a Penn Medicine team to further develop infrastructure and clinical capacity to address antimicrobial resistance and infectious diseases in Botswana.

More than 90,000 people in the United States are awaiting kidney transplants, with wait-times that can be five, seven, even 10 or more years, but new research from a team in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, in partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital and other centers, show more options for cutting those wait times.

After looking at the health records of over 10,000 patients with both HIV and multidrug resistant Tuberculosis (TB) in over 20 different countries, researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, McGill University, and other institutions around the world, found that implementing antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV and newer tuberculosis medications decreased the risk of death for adults with drug-resistant TB.
