Penn Medicine attracts residency and fellowship applicants from top-ranked universities throughout the world who are interested in careers in academic medicine.

The "best of the best" come to Penn for their clinical training because of the expertise our faculty offers. We routinely perform procedures that may be done only occasionally at other locations, enabling residents and fellows to see an array of conditions and procedures. Our collaborative environment fosters productive interaction among fellow trainees and physicians from other disciplines and faculty, and graduates of our residency and fellowship programs are highly recruited for leadership positions in private practice and academic medicine.

Our combined missions of research, education, clinical care and community service are at the core of our fellowship and residency programs. The multi-disciplinary training environment offers carefully designed progression of responsibility, autonomy and expectation that prepares residents and fellows to accomplish their goals.

Health Benefits

Comprehensive health insurance is provided for residents, their spouses/domestic partners, and dependent children. Residents participate in a long-term disability plan and life insurance. Malpractice insurance is also provided by the institution at no cost to the resident. Coverage options and plan details can be found on our website, UPHS HR and You (select UPHS).

Vacation

Residents are entitled to four weeks paid vacation during the academic year, along with five personal days. Penn residents and fellows are provided up to 12 weeks of FMLA leave annually (six weeks paid; six weeks unpaid) starting from the first day of employment for parental leave to support our residents and their families. Any unused vacation days may not be paid out as additional compensation.

Family Leave and Child Care

The Penn program offers up to 12 weeks of FMLA for maternity leave or paternity leave to support our residents. In addition, the University of Pennsylvania has three Penn affiliated childcare centers on or near campus including the Penn Children's Center - University of Pennsylvania which is just blocks away from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
