Thyroid Nodule Clinic at Penn
More than 12 million Americans have thyroid nodules that require medical evaluation. In addition, the annual incidence of thyroid cancer is rapidly rising and its rate of increase outpaces that of all other malignancies.
For patients who require a thyroid needle fine aspiration biopsy (FNA), there is a designated Thyroid Nodule Clinic at the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. This unique clinic allows for on-site evaluation of thyroid nodules and FNA with an on-site team comprised of an endocrinologist, radiologist, and pathologist. Some Penn endocrinologists also perform thyroid FNA in their offices.
Dr. Mandel created the model for thyroid nodule evaluative services, and created Penn's thyroid nodule clinic – the only one of its kind in the region – which uses the latest diagnostic and imaging technology to diagnose and develop a treatment plan for thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer.
The thyroid nodule clinic is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of experts from endocrinology, radiology, surgery, nuclear medicine, pathology and cytology. Together, they diagnosis and evaluate patients – often providing preliminary reports the same day.
