Getting Evaluated for a Hernia

A hernia is a weakness in the abdominal wall that allows tissue inside your body to push into an area where it shouldn't be. For example, a weakened muscle can create an opening for a small piece of tissue (most commonly fat or intestine tissue) to bulge through. A hernia appears as a bulge of tissue under the skin (often in the belly or groin area).

There are several types of hernias. A hernia commonly occurs in the midsection (abdomen) or groin. It may cause discomfort or pain. Some people experience no pain at all. Hernias cannot be fixed with medications. They usually require surgery to repair.
