The Future of Minimally Invasive Care

Interventional radiology (IR) is a field of medicine that utilizes the most advanced technology available to perform image-guided procedures to treat a wide variety of diseases throughout the body.

Conditions treated include:

  • Acute and chronic deep vein thrombosis
  • Cancer (liver, kidney, bone and lung) 
  • Diseases of the lymphatic system
  • Endoleaks from abdominal aortic aneurysms
  • Hemodialysis access dysfunction
  • Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT)/Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs)
  • Peripheral arterial disease/critical limb ischemia (CLI)
  • Vascular malformations/varicose and spider veins
  • Women's health conditions (eg. uterine fibroids, pelvic congestion syndrome)
  • Inferior vena cava (IVC) filter problems

Interventional radiology treatments minimize risk, require smaller incisions and are generally performed with sedation rather than general anesthesia. Many conditions that previously required traditional open surgery can now be treated with small catheters or other devices guided by radiologic imaging; often a less costly procedure that allows for a faster recovery.

In addition to the over 12,000 procedures we perform annually, Penn Interventional Radiology has an inpatient admitting service, inpatient consult service and daily outpatient consultation and follow-up clinic.

Chemoembolization

Deep Vein Thrombosis Treatment

A blood clot that forms in a deep vein of the legs or arm (deep vein thrombosis) can be painful and life-threatening. Medication or minimally invasive procedures offered at Penn Medicine can help to remove or dissolve blockage and reduce further complications.

Hemodialysis Access Management

Hemodialysis is a procedure that withdraws blood from the body into a machine that uses a special membrane (dialyzer) to filter wastes and remove extra fluid from the blood.

IVC Filter Removal

Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters trap dangerous blood clots before they reach the lungs. Normally removed when no longer needed, IVC filters can also become embedded in the vein and require a special retrieval procedure pioneered at Penn Medicine.

PAVM Embolization

Peripheral Arterial Disease Treatment

Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunts (TIPS)

The transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) acts like a surgical shunt in diverting blood away from the congested portal vein into the main venous system, but it is minimally invasive (not major) surgery.

Tumor Ablation

Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Uterine fibroid embolization, also called uterine artery embolization (UAE), is a minimally invasive treatment for uterine fibroids performed by an Interventional Radiologist.

Varicocele Embolization

Varicoceles may be treated surgically by a urologist (varicocelectomy) or by a minimally invasive method (varicocele embolization) by an Interventional Radiologist.
