Endocrinologists at the Penn Bone Center are committed to the assessment and treatment of patients who have osteoporosis, Paget's disease, parathyroid disorders and other abnormalities of bone repair and growth.

Osteoporosis, one of the most common bone disorders, affects women more than men. The number of people in the United States with osteoporosis currently exceeds 28 million, and the annual cost of this disease to the U.S. health care system is over 13 billion dollars. Osteoporosis is often referred to as a silent disease because of its lack of symptoms. In fact, the first symptom of osteoporosis is often a fracture; therefore, it is imperative to evaluate and treat osteoporosis as early as possible, ideally before the fracture occurs.

Over the course of a lifetime, a woman has a greater than 50% chance of having a fracture. By the time of the fracture, a woman has most likely lost 30% or more of her bone mass, and this puts her at risk for additional fractures.

The mission at Penn's Bone Center is to evaluate and treat patients with low bone mineral density who are at an increased risk of fractures. We fulfill this mission by practicing the newest methods for screening, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
