Description of Research Expertise
Dr. Courtwright is a clinician in the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. His research is divided between issues in resource allocation in lung transplantation and clinical ethics.
Dr. Courtwright is currently focused on three projects: 1) refining our understanding of HLA antibodies pre- and post-transplant to improve access to lung transplantation for sensitized patients. 2) Strategies for expanding the lung donor pool, including utilization of hepatitis B donors. 3) Transplantation ethics, including organ procurement via normothermic regional perfusion and xenotransplantation. In addition, he is involved in collaborative work on telomere biology disorders and lung transplantation with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, ethics consultation research with the Massachusetts General Hospital Ethics Committee, and bacteriophage therapy and infection following lung transplantation with the University of California San Diego.
