I am Professor of Urology and Co-Director of the Urologic Cancer Program, and past Chief of Urology at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. I was also the Thomas Stitcher Memorial Term Professor of Urologic Research (2007-2012). My medical degree is from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and my general surgery and urologic training were at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. I completed my urological oncology training at the University of Southern California and Wistar Institute. My current clinical interests include all aspects of bladder cancer care and renal tumors.

My major research interests include basic mechanism of tumor progression, tumor metabolism and molecular epidemiology of genitourinary tumors, as well as clinical outcomes studies.  Basic studies provide the clues for new therapeutic targets while outcome research allows us to assess what is working and what can be improved in the clinical environment. This research includes authorship of nearly 400 original articles, reviews and book chapters. I am currently associate editor of the journal of Bladder Cancer as well as having completed terms on Urologic Oncology and as section editor for the British Journal of Urology International. My professional society membership includes the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons, The Society of Pelvic Surgeons (past president), the Urologic Research Society, The Society of Surgical Oncology. I am past president of the Philadelphia Urologic Society and the Southeastern Pennsylvania chapter of the American Cancer Society. I’ve had the honor of being regularly listed in the Best Doctors in Philadelphia and the Best Doctors in the USA directories including Top Doctors for cancer in the country.
