I am the Vice Chairman for Quality and Risk Management and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. I chair the Department of Surgery’s Quality Committee. I retired from clinical practice July 1, 2020.
I received my undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Illinois, and completed my residency in general surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. My first faculty appointment was to the division of gastrointestinal surgery at the University of Michigan. I joined the Penn faculty in 1993. I received my law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 2012. My academic interests focus on health law-related topics especially informed consent, healthcare reform, and risk reduction strategies for medical malpractice.
I am certified by the American Board of Surgery and have Added Qualifications in Surgical Critical Care. I am a licensed attorney in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
