Gastroenterology New Faculty
Chung Sang Tse, MD, comes to Penn GI from the University of California, San Diego, where she was an advanced IBD fellow.
A graduate of Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Tse completed her residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and completed fellowships in gastroenterology and women's gastroenterological health at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
Dr. Tse is an inflammatory bowel disease specialist. Her clinical and research interests include the treatment and pathogenesis, respectively, of Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, and sclerosing cholangitis, among other conditions.
Board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, Dr. Tse sees patients at the Penn Digestive and Liver Health Center University City.
Shivani Thanawala, MD, MSCE, is a graduate of New York University School of Medicine in New York, NY, and completed her internal medicine residency within the NYU SOM hospital system. Subsequently, she completed fellowships in gastroenterology and advanced esophagology and an MS in clinical epidemiology at the Perelman School of Medicine. Dr. Thanawala's clinical and research interests include eosinophilic esophagitis, Barrett's esophagus, esophageal adenocarcinoma, as well as pancreatitis and irritable bowel syndrome.
Board certified in internal medicine and board eligible in gastroenterology, Dr. Thanawala sees patients at Penn Digestive and Liver Health Center University City and Penn Gastroenterology Pennsylvania Hospital.
Sarah E. Coughlin, MD, recently completed fellowships in advanced endoscopy and gastroenterology and an MS in clinical epidemiology at the Perelman School of Medicine. She received her medical degree from the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine and completed her residency in the UCSF hospital system. Dr. Coughlin's clinical and research interests focus upon pancreatic disorders.
Board certified in internal medicine and board eligible in gastroenterology and hepatology, Dr. Coughlin sees patients at Penn Gastroenterology Pennsylvania Hospital.
Christopher J. Schmoyer, MD, is a graduate of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine in Scranton, PA. He completed his internship, residency, and a fellowship in inflammatory bowel disease and nutrition at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, and was a Fellow in gastroenterology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Schmoyer's clinical and research interests encompass inflammatory bowel disease and Crohn's disease, liver transplantation, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Board certified in internal medicine and board eligible in gastroenterology, Dr. Schmoyer sees patients at Penn Digestive and Liver Health Center University City.
Christine Chan, MD, was most recently an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. A graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in the Bronx, NY, Dr. Chan completed her internship and residency at New York Presbyterian-Columbia University Medical Center. She subsequently completed fellowships in gastroenterology and hepatology and transplant hepatology at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University/Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Chan's clinical and research interests focus upon diseases of the liver and liver transplantation.

GI Surgery New Faculty
Maria S. Altieri, MD, MS
The newest faculty member of the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Maria S. Altieri, MD, MS, has joined as Section Head of GI Surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital.
A graduate of The George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, Dr. Altieri completed her surgical training at SUNY-Stony Brook School of Medicine in Long Island. Subsequently, Dr. Altieri completed fellowship training in the MIS program at Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Altieri's clinical interests include bariatric, minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Her additional interests include graduate medical education, clinical outcomes research, and disparities in surgical care. She has published numerous journal articles and book chapters in these areas of interest.
Board certified in surgery, Dr. Altieri sees patients at Penn Gastrointestinal Surgery and the Penn Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program, both at Penn Medicine Washington Square.
Victoria Merrill Gershuni, MD, MTR, MSGM
A former chief resident in General Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Victoria M. Gershuni, MD, MTR, MSGM, returns to Penn Medicine after completing a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery/advanced GI, foregut, and bariatric surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where she earned her MD. She completed a Master's in Translational Research (MTR) at the Perelman School of Medicine during her residency at HUP.
Dr. Gershuni's clinical practice will offer advanced MIS laparoscopic and robotic techniques to treat benign GI diseases. Board certified in surgery, she sees patients at Penn Gastrointestinal Surgery Perelman and Penn Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program Perelman.
Daniel Alejandro Hashimoto, MD, MS
A graduate of the Perelman School of Medicine, Daniel A. Hashimoto, MD, completed his internship and residency in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, where he was co-founder and Associate Director of Research for the Surgical AI and Innovation Laboratory. He subsequently completed a fellowship in foregut surgery and comprehensive flexible endoscopy at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Concurrent to his medical education, Dr. Hashimoto received an MS degree in Translational Research in Surgical Education and Technology from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Hashimoto's clinical interests encompass surgical and endoscopic treatments for gastrointestinal diseases, including laparoscopic and robotic surgical and endoscopic procedures.
He will be leading the Penn Computer Assisted Surgery and Outcomes (PCASO) Laboratory at Penn Surgery, a venture that will bridge Penn Surgery and the Penn School of Engineering and Applied Sciences to develop AI and computer vision technologies for safer surgery. Board certified in surgery, he sees patients at Penn Gastrointestinal Surgery Perelman.
