More than 40 years ago, James F. Markmann, MD, PhD, was a first-year medical student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where among many other academic accomplishments, he co-authored his first major article with Drs. Willys Kent Silvers, Donald Bellgrau, Clyde F Barker, and Ali Naji.
On December 1st, Dr. Markmann (having published more than 400 additional journal articles in the intervening years), will rejoin Drs. Barker and Naji when he returns to Penn as Vice Chair of Transplant in the Department of Surgery. He was most recently the Chief of the Division of Transplant Surgery and Director of Clinical Operations at the Transplant Center at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Claude Welch Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He is active in numerous societies, editorial boards and organizations and is Past President of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association, and Treasurer of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.
Dr. Markmann specializes in transplantation of the liver, kidney, and pancreas, as well as islet cell transplantation, a procedure he first performed at Penn and a topic of ongoing research for more than 30 years. Additional research interests include ex vivo liver perfusion to improved marginal organ function, transplantation immunobiology, xenotransplantation, the induction of immunological tolerance, and the mechanism of action of regulatory T- and B cells in graft survival.
In addition to his surgical duties within the Department of Surgery, Dr. Markmann will serve as the Vice President of Transplant Services for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The Penn Transplant Institute is thrilled to welcome Dr. Markmann back to Penn and looks forward to working together with him to continue advancing the field of transplantation.
