In March, Penn Trauma Reports Focus on Key Themes in Trauma Care

March trauma report graphicIn March 2023, the journal reports from Penn Trauma reflected the themes defining modern trauma research, including suicide prediction, gun violence, trauma in the elderly, and postraumatic stress.

Can suicide risk be predicted to plan for prevention?

Esposti MD, Kaufman EJ.

Lancet Pub Heal 2023;8:E162-E163.

Suicide rates in the USA have increased by more than 30% in the past two decades, with suicide ranking during this time among the ten most common causes of death. Commenting in Lancet Public Health on a recently published prediction modeling study that estimated county-level suicide risk in the USA, Eleanor Kaufman, MD, MSHP, of Penn Trauma notes that the authors’ use of up-to-date population risk monitoring in real time could inform needed interventions, and have the potential to identify new opportunities for innovation in mental and public health care to decrease risk across the population.
