Charmaine grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and attended Duke University for college and medical school. During her time in medical school, she conducted research on immune correlates of protection against mother-to-child transmission of HIV. She then spent an additional year in Galle, Sri Lanka to conduct research with the Duke Global Health Institute on dengue virus epidemiology in southern Sri Lanka. She completed Medicine-Pediatrics residency at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital and became more interested in antimicrobial stewardship as well as applications of tropical medicine and global health domestically, prompting her to complete the Diploma in Tropical Medicine through the Baylor National School of Tropical Medicine and the ASTMH CTropMed certificate program. Charmaine is pursuing training in combined Med-Peds infectious diseases. Outside of medicine, she enjoys dancing, running outside, exploring outdoor markets, and spending time with her cat Remy.
