Zachary grew up in the greater Philadelphia area and attended Pennsylvania State University for his undergraduate studies, where he majored in biochemistry and molecular biology and first began his scientific training in a research lab. He then attended the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating from the dual degree MD-PhD program after completing dissertation work focused on a bacterial pathway that leads to antibiotic resistance. Following this, Zachary completed his residency training in internal medicine at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. After several years spent living away from the Philadelphia area, Zachary and his family returned to the Philadelphia area so that he could pursue fellowship training in infectious diseases. During his first year of fellowship, Zachary cultivated clinical and research interests in infections caused by antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. The current focus of his post-doctoral research revolves around the molecular mechanisms of beta-lactamase enzymes, which are among the most prevalent and most important causes of antibiotic resistance in many clinically important Gram-negative bacteria.
