Charmaine grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and attended Duke University for college and medical school. During her time in medical school, she conducted research on immune correlates of protection against mother-to-child transmission of HIV. She then spent an additional year in Galle, Sri Lanka to conduct research with the Duke Global Health Institute on dengue virus epidemiology in southern Sri Lanka. She completed Medicine-Pediatrics residency at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital and is currently pursuing training in combined adult and pediatric infectious diseases. She is currently pursuing the Master of Science in Health Policy (MSHP) research with Concentration in Healthcare Quality and Safety. She is interested in understanding current practices in infectious diagnostic testing, including cognitive and behavioral foundations of ordering and interpreting infectious diagnostic tests, and using QI methodology to inform diagnostic stewardship initiatives to reduce antimicrobial overuse and diagnostic error in infectious diseases. Outside of medicine, she enjoys dancing, running outside, exploring outdoor markers, and spending time with her husband and her cat.
