The Section of Allergy and Immunology at Penn Medicine provides a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to a broad range of allergic and immunologic conditions. Our physicians are trained to apply the latest evidence, as well as an individual approach to the diagnosis and treatment of both common and complex conditions. This approach and our partnership with Penn’s pulmonary, rheumatology, otorhinolaryngology, dermatology, and oncology divisions, allows us to deliver total care to our patients, and makes us a trusted and preferred referral center.
At Penn, we are dedicated to diagnosing and treating conditions including:
- Environmental, food, and hymenoptera (bee sting) allergy
- Drug allergy
- Asthma, including severe and difficult to treat asthma
- Chronic urticaria, including refractory urticaria
- Angioedema syndromes
- Mastocytosis
- Immunodeficiency disorders
- Eosinophilia
The Penn Allergy and Immunology Section provides care for patients with severe and complex asthma syndromes. We provide Biologic treatment for >400 asthma patients. Our faculty conduct research that focuses on the epidemiology, treatment and disparities in asthma.
Penn faculty are regional leaders in the evaluation of drug allergy. The Drug Allergy Program provides comprehensive evaluation for drug allergies, both inpatient and outpatient, and research focuses on beta-lactam allergy in vulnerable populations including those with hematologic malignancy and pregnancy.
The Penn Biologics Center provides targeted treatments (biologics) to patients with refractory or difficult to control asthma, chronic spontaneous urticaria, severe eczema and chronic sinusitis.
Our physicians have expertise in managing patients with recurrent or unusual infections, immune deficiency, and immune dysregulation. We work closely with the pediatric allergy and immunology division to provide excellent care for adolescents and young adults who are transitioning to adult care. Our experts also utilize diagnostic tools such as advanced laboratory testing and genetic testing to guide diagnosis, prognosis, and management of patients with immunodeficiency syndromes.
Penn is designated a World Allergy Organization Center of Excellence, which recognizes our work to achieve excellence in education, research, and training to various stakeholders in allergy, asthma, and clinical immunology.
