The Spine & Sports Musculoskeletal Medicine Fellowship is a NASS-recognized specialized post-graduate training program designed to provide focused knowledge and skills in the management of persons with spine and musculoskeletal disorders. This is a 12-month program that offers clinical and interventional care, teaching and research experiences for select physiatrists at the Penn Spine Center.
The mission of the program is to provide spine and musculoskeletal medicine education to academically inclined physiatrists who have completed an accredited residency training program and who wish to bring clinical excellence to the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. It incorporates:
Clinical Education
- Exposure to acute, sub-acute and chronic musculoskeletal and spine pathology
- Exposure to shadowing a musculoskeletal physical therapist at scheduled clinics
- Opportunity to learn fluoroscopically guided spinal injections and ultrasound guided peripheral joint injections under direct attending supervision at scheduled clinics
- Maintain and sharpen electrodiagnostic skills
- Supervise medical students and PM&R residents clinically and didactically
- Opportunity to set up half-day clinics with interventional radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, sports medicine physicians, radiologists
- Opportunity to see patients in the Penn Sports Medicine Center
Teaching Opportunities
- Organize Journal Club and Interdisciplinary Spine Rounds Conference
- Supervise Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania PM&R residents and medical students on rotation
Research Opportunities
- Adopt and work on a significant musculoskeletal research project at the Penn Spine Center
- Prepare for and give Grand Rounds style presentations
- Write a publishable chapter or article
Patient Care
- Penn Spine Center outpatient clinics both independently and directly supervised by attending
- Penn Spine Center procedure clinics directly supervised by attending
- Electrodiagnostic examinations both independently and directly supervised by attending
- Weekend inpatient call
- Checking messages/voicemail on a regular basis. All patient care related phone calls should be returned within one working day.
Fellowship Requirements
Requirements for consideration for the Spine & Sports Musculoskeletal Medicine Fellowship at Penn include:
- Completion of an accredited North American physical medicine and rehabilitation residency
- Personal statement
- Curriculum vitae
- Three letters of recommendation, with at least two being from your academic institution
