Penn Presbyterian Medical Center offers a two year, patient-oriented clinical research fellowship in podiatric medicine and surgery. The fellowship provides aspiring investigators an opportunity to learn the principles of clinical research, and time to work on original and group research, while refining their skills in the clinical practice setting. This program offers a unique opportunity for an outstanding candidate with a strong interest in patient-oriented research who demonstrates the ability to work both independently and as part of a group. Because clinical research questions arise during clinical practice, when a clinician is face-to-face with patients, the candidate must also be a compassionate provider of patient care. The program’s focus is on clinical research, and not on refining surgical skills in the operating room. Podiatric Research Fellows will:
Collaborate in clinical research with Penn attendings and residents
Manage patients in a busy foot and ankle surgical practice
Gain an understanding of different clinical research methods—randomized controlled trials, cohort and case-control studies, health measurements and surveys, quasi-experiments, and other investigational techniques
Design, implement, and analyze an original (the fellow’s own) research project
Learn how health measurement applies to epidemiological research
Learn and refine one’s skills for critically appraising the medical literature
Gain an understanding of biostatistical principles that pertain to epidemiology
Develop, maintain, and statistically interpret a set of clinical data
Participate on a Penn institutional review board
Develop, present, and publish original research posters, abstracts, and reports
