The Department of Pathology at Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia (a component of the University of Pennsylvania Health System) offers a 1- year fellowship in general surgical pathology. The responsibilities of fellows include supervised sign-out of a comprehensive range of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic surgical specimens and responsibility for frozen section diagnosis.

Fellows participate in all aspects of surgical pathology, with increased responsibility for independent decision making and diagnosis.

Fellows at Pennsylvania Hospital have many opportunities for interacting with faculty and teaching of residents and students.

The rotations are primarily at Pennsylvania Hospital. Fellows are offered elective rotations in various subspecialty services at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Development of a clinical / translational research project during the fellowship year is strongly encouraged.

In addition, fellows who want to put emphasis on specific organ systems (GI, GU, BREAST and GYN), after consulting with our staff pathologists, may focus their sign-out activities in those areas of surgical pathology.

Fellows can choose elective rotations at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, according to interest, depending on availability.

The laboratory accessions approximately 16,000 surgical specimens a year.
