The primary services performed are general surgery, heart and vascular, orthopaedic and ophthalmologic procedures. Subspecialties include, but are not limited to otorhinolaryngology, pain management and podiatry along with image-guided surgery for cardiac, otorhinolaryngology and orthopaedic procedures.

Penn Medicine is one of the nation's leading centers for robotic-assisted surgery and a number of procedures are being performed at all three Penn Medicine hospitals. A comprehensive Gateway to the Operating Room Program allows both novice staff and new-to-operating room (OR) nurses the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to function effectively as a registered nurse (RN) in the operating room.

The Perioperative Services Department at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) includes the operating room, the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), the ambulatory procedure unit (APU), the SurgiCentre at the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine and the endoscopy suite. Operating room nurses at HUP are key members of the surgical team. They provide the highest level of care to patients during surgical procedures.

With 12 specialty areas, the operating room performs a variety of surgical procedures including cardiac, vascular, transplant, trauma and neurosurgery in a state-of-the-art environment. The highly skilled nurses in the ambulatory procedure unit and SurgiCentre provide a superior level of care to those who have undergone outpatient surgical procedures.

The nurses in the post-anesthesia care unit combine their critical care nursing skills with their expert surgical knowledge to care for patients immediately following a variety of complex surgical procedures.

Penn Presbyterian Medical Center's surgical suite is a leading center for minimally invasive surgical procedures, including robotic-assisted surgery. Minimally invasive, high-tech treatments offer a number of advantages, shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery.

As patients transition into the post-anesthesia care unit, nurses collaborate with the anesthesia, surgical and medical staff to provide an excellent atmosphere for learning.

Patients who pass through the short-term procedure unit and pre- and post-op care areas encounter an environment in which they and their families are encouraged to be involved in the care.

The Perianesthesia and Ambulatory Services at Pennsylvania Hospital are comprised of Perianesthesia (Pre-Admission Testing, pre-op/PACU, Extended Stay Unit), Interventional Radiology, Gamma Knife, Operating Rooms, the Ambulatory Surgery Center at Rittenhouse, Cardiology Services (Cath Lab, Electrophysiology, Heart Station, Echo), Endoscopy, and the Abramson Cancer Center at Pennsylvania Hospital. 

PAH is known as a "Center of Excellence" for many surgical procedures, and nurses work as part of an interprofessional team with some of the finest surgeons in the region to provide care for over 25,000 innovative and complex cases per year.  A full range of procedures are performed in state-of-the-art operating suites including cardiac procedures, minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgery, three-dimensional stereotactic neurosurgery, total joint replacement, and a progressive bloodless surgery program.
