The initiation of the electronic medical record, known as Knowledge Based Charting (KBC) at the Penn Medicine was an exciting initiative that marked a transformation in the delivery of high quality patient care. KBC allows for reduced variation in practice, incorporating evidence based practice information that is real-time and provides many tools for clinicians to provide safe, patient- and family-centered care. This electronic medical record documentation via bedside computers has allowed Penn Medicine nurses to provide patient- and family-centered care, delivered through an evidence-based, interdisciplinary practice model that supports a healthy work environment and positive outcomes.
