Like many of our partners, Penn Medicine is striving for continuous quality improvement in our secure exchange tools by meeting Quality Payment Program requirements and as a member of HealthShare Exchange, the Delaware Valley region's health information exchange (HIE).

If your practice currently utilizes an electronic health records system (EHR), your clinical providers can correspond directly with Penn network providers in a secure, HIPAA-compliant way via direct messaging through your EHR. Direct messaging meets Quality Payment Program requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know my direct address?

Your direct address is assigned through your EHR system. Ask your practice manager or technical support for your EHR about your direct address and electronic messaging. They can also inform you how your practice’s direct addresses are shared with other organizations.

How do I get a direct address if my EHR doesn’t offer this functionality?

In the unlikely event that your EHR vendor does not support direct messaging, you can obtain a direct address through a health information service provider (HISP). In the Great Philadelphia/Delaware Valley area, you can request a direct address from HealthShare Exchange (HSX). Contact HSX Member Services to learn more about their Direct Secure Messaging services.

Is my direct address the same as my email address?

No. The direct address from your EHR is different from your email address. Email is not a secure transaction and we cannot send patient information to your email address. Your direct address allows us to send a secure, direct message from the Penn Medicine EHR to your practice’s EHR.

The Direct Address from your EHR will be similar to these examples: name@direct.hospital.org, name@greenwaypractice.gwaydirect.com, name@direct.practicefusion.com, name@practice.eclinicaldirectplus.com, name@practice.allscriptsdirect.net.

Is my direct address confidential?

No. In fact, it’s essential to give your direct address to clinicians you work with, and obtain their direct addresses in return, so you can communicate electronically and securely about your shared patients. Direct addresses are also made publicly available through the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) web site.

Penn PhysicianLink

Another way to securely communicate with Penn Medicine providers is through Penn PhysicianLink—Penn's secure online portal.

If you have patients who are being treated at Penn, you can request a Penn PhysicianLink account (Penn's EHR), including their lab and imaging results, procedure reports, allergy-procedure interactions, and billing reports.

Clinicians and their administrative staff are welcome to create accounts.
