Princeton Medical Center (PMC) ranked among New Jersey’s best hospitals for overall patient experience during Fiscal Year 2021, according to data published by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) earlier this year.
The data – covering nine months from July 1, 2020 through March 31, 2021 – shows that PMC ranked among the top 10 percent of New Jersey hospitals for the percentage of patients who would definitely recommend the hospital and the percentage that would rate PMC as a 9 or 10 (of a possible 10). PMC also rated highly for patient perceptions related to nurse communication, doctor communication, the hospital environment, transitioning to another care facility, and whether staff took their preferences into account.
“Our patients deserve high-quality care with a personal touch, and our staff should be commended for these results,” said James Demetriades, CEO of Penn Medicine Princeton Health. “At PMC and across Princeton Health, our goal is to be a leader in quality of care and patient experience. That requires a commitment to continuous improvement, and I am confident that our staff will look to build on these results.”
The statistics published by CMS aggregate the results of patient experience surveys known as HCAHPS (or Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems).
According to the data on the website, PMC’s overall rating was 3rd best among 63 New Jersey hospitals, which corresponds to the 95th percentile. PMC ranked similarly in the percentage of patients who would recommend PMC and the percentage that rated the hospital as a 9 or 10.
PMC’s score for cleanliness tied for the highest among New Jersey hospitals.
Becker’s Hospital Review noted PMC’s high rankings for nurse communication.
The HCAHPS data show that PMC’s nurse communication score tied for 5th highest among 63 New Jersey hospitals.
The category accounts for patients’ responses to a series of questions that include whether nurses explained things in a way they could understand, listened carefully, and treated them with courtesy and respect.
