Congratulations to Karyn Book, RN, MSN, Princeton Health’s new chief nursing officer (CNO) and vice president, Patient Care Services.
In her new role, Book will be responsible for strategic management of the departments of Nursing, Education, Acute Rehabilitation, and Pulmonary Services, as well as supporting new hospital-based programs and initiatives to promote clinical excellence, recruitment, and retention.
Book joined Princeton Health in 1998 and filled a variety of roles, including Homecare/Hospice nurse, Critical Care nurse and educator, nurse manager, administrative coordinator, and professional practice administrator. When Princeton Medical Center (PMC) first earned Magnet® recognition in 2012, Book was the program director.
She then became director of Patient Care Services and Professional Development, during which time she acted as executive director of Quality, Patient Safety, and Risk and liaison to the Board of Trustees and Performance Improvement Committee. Book served as interim CNO between September 2017 and December 2018 and then as associate CNO.
As associate CNO, Book was responsible for day-to-day nursing operations and had oversight of the medical-surgical units; Telemetry; the Clinical Decision Unit; Acute Rehabilitation; Diabetes Management; the Wound and Ostomy Program; Palliative Care; Nursing Resources, including the RN and NA Float Pool; Transport; and nursing supervisors.
Book is a co-author of published research and she presented at national conferences on topics such as reducing heart failure readmissions and a PMC study related to preventing pressure injuries in patients who are placed in the prone position. Book is also the lead investigator for Magnet4Europe, an international project to improve hospital work environments and promote mental health and well-being in the workplace.
A licensed registered nurse in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Book is a member of several professional organizations, including the Organization of Nurse Leaders of New Jersey, the American Nurses Association, and the American Organization of Nurse Executives.
She earned her Master of Science in Nursing, with a focus on nursing administration and education, from Holy Family University and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from York College of Pennsylvania. Book is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Nursing Practice Executive Leadership Program at the University of Pennsylvania, with an expected graduation in the summer of 2023.
