Penn Presbyterian Medical Center was recently honored by Fortune magazine and IBM Watson Health as one of the country’s 50 top cardiovascular hospitals for inpatient cardiovascular services and was ranked #2 for top teaching hospitals with a cardiovascular residency program.
Hospitals do not apply to participate. This year’s study included 951 U.S. hospitals with cardiovascular service lines, using publicly available data to evaluate measures such as inpatient and 30-day mortality, patient complications, 30-day readmission, and average lengths of stay. The evaluators also assessed the cost per case for acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery bypass graft, percutaneous coronary intervention, and heart-failure patients. This year, the organization added a patient experience measure.
“This a major achievement that we know can only have been accomplished through all of your hard work and efforts every day,” Harvey L. Waxman, MD, chief of Cardiology at PPMC and professor of Clinical Medicine at Perelman School of Medicine, wrote in a message directed to the staff. “It is an honor and privilege to work with such an outstanding team of professionals delivering world-class care and outcomes.”
